Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps.
