Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
