Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
