Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
