Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
