Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
