Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps.
