Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
