Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
