Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
