Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
