Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
