Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
