Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
