Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
