Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
