Be smart, play smart, and pickup craps the ideal way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
