Be clever, play brilliant, and pickup craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
