Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
