Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French relocated down south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
