Be brilliant, play cunning, and discover how to play craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
