Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
