Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
