Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
