Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved down south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
