Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
