Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
