Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
