Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
