Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
